5 Important Bible Verses About the Second Coming

Do you know that Jesus and His Apostles were teaching that His Second Coming would be in their time?

The Second Coming of Jesus

Here are 5 Important bible verses that show that Jesus’ Second Coming was promised to happen in the time of the First Christians.

Maybe you have been hearing a lot of Second Coming Bible verses being thrown about, but have you taken time to actually read what they say? This is a brief study of a few Second Coming of Jesus Christ Bible verses to show you what Jesus actually said concerning his promised coming.

#1 Christ promised his Second Coming to happen during the Persecution of the First Christians

Jesus told his disciples that his Second Coming would happen during their lifetime.

He said to them, “But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.” (Matt 10:23)

Jesus, speaking to his disciples about the coming persecutions which they should endure (see Matt 10:16-22), made a positive prediction – The Son of Man would come while they were fleeing Jewish persecution in the cities of Israel.

#2 Christ promised that some of his disciples would live to see him come into his Kingdom

“For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.” (Matt 16:27-28)

This promise was made by Christ, enforced by his use of the word “verily”, which is the Greek word ‘amen’ when used at the beginning of a statement means ‘surely, truly, of a truth.’
We can see that Christ promised surely that some of his disciples who were standing there listening to him ‘shall not taste of death’ till they saw him coming in his Kingdom. He would come before some of them died!

This excludes the thought that he meant some unspecified time in the future. Christ pinpointed his coming within the lifetime of his disciples who were actually there with him.

#3 Jesus promised those at his trial that they would see him coming

“But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you,
Hereafter* shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (Matt 26:63-64)

*The word ‘hereafter’ is the Greek ‘Arti’ meaning ‘just now.’

Jesus positively indicated that the high priest who administered at his trial, and possibly others present, would see him coming in the clouds of heaven ‘hereafter’, or shortly from that point in time. These people would have been alive to see that event.

#4 Jesus said that the Day of the Lord would occur in the lifetime of those he preached to

“Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. (Luke 21:32-34)

Here Christ warned that ALL Last Day Prophesies would come to pass in that generation. They needed to take heed lest the Day of the Lord come unawares to them. What generation was He speaking to? It was the generation of Israel which lived at the time that Jesus walked the earth. The Day of the Lord would come to pass in their lifetime – before they passed away.

#5 The Early Church knew the Lord was coming in a little while, and that He would not delay His Coming

“For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.” (Heb 10:37)

The certainty of the imminence of the coming of Christ is too blatant to be ignored or explained away.

Paul was certain that the Lord would come in ‘a little while’ using the Greek word ‘micron’ meaning a ‘small space of time.’ Obviously context is also key here, Paul was not measuring time from the perspective of the 21st century person reading the Scriptures, Paul was measuring time from circa 55AD. The coming of the Lord was a little while from Paul’s day, not our day.

Not only was the time short, but there was to be no delay, the Lord would ‘not tarry.’ He came soon and He came quickly to the First Christians!
