Jesus warned Caiaphas that he would live to see the coming of the Son of Man. It would happen in his generation!
The Gospels record the words Jesus spoke to the generation of Israel that he had been sent to. In Matthew 24:30, he told his disciples of his coming. He indicated that his coming would happen immediately after they witnessed the Great Tribulation. “Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven. And then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn. And they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory!”
Jesus told his disciples that his coming would happen before their generation passed!
Jesus then went on to make a solemn oath to his disciples, “Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled!”
What generation was he speaking of? Was it a generation of people thousands of years later?
No! It was the same generation that would witness the destruction of the ancient Jerusalem temple, which came to pass in 70AD!
They would live to see the coming of the Son of Man in the clouds of heaven.
Jesus told Caiaphas (and those with Caiaphas) that they would be among those who would witness that coming.
“I say unto you, Hereafter shall all of you see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven!” Matt 26:64
Notice, Jesus placed Caiaphas and his company in that generation which would not pass, till all those things were fulfilled!
What other pertinent information did Jesus give concerning the generation he would return to?
Jesus said the generation that would not pass till the fulfillment of those things, was the one which would reject him and crucify him.
He said “But first must he [Jesus] suffer many things, and be rejected of this generation.”
Jesus said the generation that would not pass till the fulfillment of those things, was the one which would persecute and kill his apostles.
He said “Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes. And some of them all of you shall kill and crucify. And some of them shall all of you scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city!” Matthew 23:34
That generation was the same one that he had to bearing the gospel of the kingdom of heaven. It was the people of Israel. He clearly said, “I was sent only to those being lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Matthew 15:24
He warned that the wrath of God would come upon the people of Israel who would kill his apostles. “That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth!” Matthew 23:35
He again pinpointed that generation as the one he was speaking to at that time. “Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.” Matthew 23:36
It is clear Jesus foretold his coming as happening in the lifetime of the people of Israel to whom he had come. And if he promised that it would happen in their lifetime, he most certainly kept that promise!
