Many believe that the place that Jesus went to prepare is an gigantic physical structure in heaven which contains many mansions.
The popular belief today is that Jesus had gone to heaven to undertake a massive construction project, building mansions for all believers.
Then, at whatever time that construction is finished, Jesus would return.
However, Jesus was not speaking of actual buildings in heaven. The place he went to prepare, was a Spiritual Relationship between God and the Believer.
The Father’s House is a Spiritual Relationship to God in Christ, not Buildings in Heaven
Jesus told his disciples, “In my Father’s House are many dwellings; but if it was not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” (John 14:2)
Jesus understood that the Temple at Jerusalem symbolized his Father’s House. We remember when he said to the Jews, “Do not make my Father’s House a house of trade!” (John 2:16)
Jesus was the True Temple of the Father
Jesus also knew that the reality of that Temple was himself. After he had chased the traders out of the Temple precincts, Jesus boldly stated that he was the fulfillment of the Temple. He said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” According to John, Jesus was speaking of “the temple of his body.” (John 2:19-21)

The Jews viewed the Temple at Jerusalem as the ‘Father’s House’ where God dwelled
The Temple at Jerusalem had been first constructed by Solomon to be “an exalted house, a place for You to dwell in forever.” (1Kgs 8:13)
However, Jesus was the True Temple because the Father dwelled in him. He said, “the Father dwelling in me does His works.” (John 14:10)
The Place that Jesus was going to prepare was the Spiritual relationship between the Father and the Believer
Thus the Father’s House that Jesus spoke of was Himself. He was going to prepare the believers to come into the Father’s House, that is, to be placed in Christ, that they and the Father could be one, as Christ and the Father are one.
Listen to the request that Jesus asked of his Father, on the night before his crucifixion. He desired that all those who believed in him “may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us…” (John 17:20-21)
Jesus expressed that he was the Father’s House – “you, Father, are in me…”
He then desired that the believers be in Him and in the Father, that is, in the ‘Father’s House.’ We see he was not talking about actual buildings, but the spiritual relationship of Father and Sons.
Christ would return to the apostles in their lifetime
This preparation was not to take thousands of years to accomplish, but was fulfilled in the lifetime of the Apostles.
Jesus reassured his disciples, that he would be coming to them, while they were living, breathing and walking on the earth. He said “If anyone should be loving Me, he will be keeping My word, and My Father will be loving him, and we shall be coming to him and making an abode with him.“ (John 14:23)
Jesus desired Believers to be One with God just like he was
This abode, or dwelling place, was the place that Christ had gone to prepare. It is a place in Christ, experienced by the living, breathing, walking believer. Just as Christ was in the Father, and the Father was in him, while he was living on earth in his flesh body, so too would anyone who believed in Christ. They would be in the Father’s House, and they would also be the House of the Father – Living Temples of God.
